Traditional Mosaic Tiles: By "traditional mosaic tiles", we mean the materials that have been used through the ages, from ancient times to now, to create artistic and decorative mosaic. Usually used for artistic work, most traditional mosaic tiles are produced and cut by hand, for a slightly irregular hand worked character. Traditional mosaic tiles include: Italian Smalti, a type of glass produced in Venice since around the 1200s; 24k Gold mosaic tiles, made by sandwiching real 24k gold foil between layers of highest quality lead crystal, ; Marble and stone mosaic , the very first of the materials used for mosaics; Semi Precious Stones and Mother of Pearl have also been used since the Babylonians to bring depth and preciousness to mosaic decorations; and finally Murano Millefiori which are a much more recent addition to the mosaicist's pallet of material choices. When cut into tiles (or shapes, or in stained glass style puzzle pieces...) it is an ideal material for mosaic, giving unprecedented freedom and choice in your tesserae shape and size. We offer coloured mirror and stained glass for mosaic in a variety of formats, from 20x20cm sheets to a variety of tile sizes to rods and even precut "crazy paving" tiles. We can also provide full sheets of glass (circa 150x60cm), but transport on this is very tricky, so we recommend a minimum of 20-30 sheets per order to merit the crating and shipping costs that are added.
